As hard as it is to believe, it looks as though the end is actually drawing near for the 2006 Miss Maine Scholarship pageant. As I write this, in the heart of the Brunswick High School's Crooker Theater, this year's contestants are going through one last rehearsal before this evening's preliminary competition. However, don't for a second think that this week has been as simple as a rehearsal here and a practice there. The contestants have been kept quite busy with appearances and meetings all week.

A comfortable Monday morning greeted our contestants on May 29th, as we made our way through a very excited and receptive Memorial Day parade. Bystanders waved, enthusiastically, and called out the names of their friends on the floats, while parents crouched low to tell their awed young ones, "Those are the Miss Maine contestants this year."
After the Memorial Day parade, and service that followed, the contestants made their way to hostess Gretchen French's home for a relaxing lunch. At lunch the girls were able to break the ice, and get to know one another a little better. It was also a wonderful opportunity for the girls to hear a little bit about Megan's year as Miss Maine, and what they all hope to look forward to.
The girls then traveled to Clay Play, in Brunswick, Maine, for a little clay play... There, each one of the girls painted their very own clay plate, which they would then present to their parents Saturday evening.
After Clay Play, the contestants made their way back to the Fairfield Inn, for supper, a wardrobe check, and a quick rehearsal.
Tuesday found our girls heading to the Togus Veterans Hospital in Central Maine, where they met with veterans, and without a doubt, brightened everyone's day.
After visiting with the Veterans, the contestants made their way to the Brunswick Wal-Mart, where they had the opportunity to meet with customers and sign autographs.
For dinner, the girls went to Winner's Sports Pub at the Atrium in Brunswick, and dined in the famous "King's Room," after which they proceeded to Crooker Theater to begin their first rehearsal on stage.
The entirety of Wednesday was devoted to rehearsal rehearsal rehearsal, from 9:30am to 10:30pm, and lunch at the school.
The girls had their interviews Thursday morning, bright and early, followed by an appearance at the Brunswick Senior Center.
After the Brunswick Senior Center, the contestants had a light dinner at Jamison Tavern in Freeport, Maine.
Thursday evening the contestants met with their family and friends at the Taste of Maine restaurant in Wiscasset, Maine.
The Outstanding Teen contestants had their interviews just this morning, and had their first rehearsal on the Crooker Theater stage just this afternoon, and I will tell you, things are really starting to shape up.
This was the first year our contestants have all had sashes and crowns, making them instantly recognizable to every one who was as lucky to be graced by their presence. Throughout the week I truly was surrounded by royalty.
