What If I Become Miss Maine?

We are certain you have thought about being Miss Maine, and we are also certain you are wondering what that means. Here are some answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.

What are my duties and responsibilities?

Your foremost goal, as well as that of the Miss Maine Scholarship Pageant Board of Directors, is for you to become Miss America and be a committed ambassador of the State of Maine. As part of your preparation and continued growth, you will make appearances on behalf of the Miss Maine Scholarship Pageant before and after the Miss America Pageant.

What about preparation for Miss America?

Preparation begins immediately after winning the Miss Maine title, as there are forms, contracts, etc. to complete. There is also wardrobe to purchase and competitions to prepare for. There will be a preparation team to assist you.

What about appearances?

Appearances are arranged through your Business Manager, who has been appointed by the Miss Maine Scholarship Pageant. Some are paid; however, some are complimentary to pageant sponsors, etc. or to some charities. The appearances you make will benefit your personal and professional improvement and enhance your year of service as Miss Maine. Miss Maine must have a current driver’s license and provide her own transportation.

What about college during my year of service?

This decision will be up to you. After all, it is a scholarship program. However, there are many factors to consider and the Miss Maine Scholarship Pageant Board of Directors will work with you.

Do I give up my individuality to be Miss Maine?

Absolutely not! Our aim is not to create a Miss Maine, but to work with you to become the best possible person and representative of our state. We will help you, guide you, and, at times, we may insist you conform to our rules and regulations. But, there will be an open dialogue between you and the Miss Maine Scholarship Pageant.

What if I have a job?

That depends on the job and your schedule. We don’t recommend you continue to hold a full-time job. It is almost impossible to prepare for Miss America, make appearances, and hold a full-time job. Miss Maine is a job unto itself.

What about my private life and my boyfriend?

We expect you to enjoy the same social life as before; however, we ask you to follow the guidelines of good taste and respectability. You must obey all federal, state, and local laws concerning the possession and/or use of alcohol and drugs. If you are convicted of a violation of federal, state, and/or local laws concerning the possession and/or use of alcohol or drugs, your title will be relinquished.

You must realize that once you become Miss Maine, you are a “public figure”. People will recognize you and react differently toward you than before you won the title. This is to be expected. You will also receive more unsolicited advice and/or criticism than before. We will try to help you sort through all of this and realize what is warranted and what is not.

Boyfriends are a fact of life. We hope that he enjoys the fact that you are Miss Maine. Due to sudden fame and time restraints, there may be a strain on your relationship. We hope we can discuss these things with both you and your boyfriend so that everyone understands your role and the responsibility you hold.

What happens after Miss America?

Of course, if you become Miss America, you will remain under the guidance of Miss America personnel. If not, you are expected to return to Maine on Sunday following Miss America with your wardrobe for the purpose of rest and relaxation and for organizing the balance of your year of service. The Business Manager will be ready to discuss what’s next for you as you serve out your year as Miss Maine.
