Outstanding Teen Information Packet
Background
The Miss Maine’s Outstanding Teen Pageant is a pageant for girls between the ages of 13 - 17 and is an affiliate of the Miss Maine and Miss America Organizations. Being a part of the Miss America Organization is a prestigious position for this teen pageant in that the Miss America Organization is the largest scholarship provider for women in the world, awarding over $45 million annually in scholarships. Our Pageant, here in Maine, has been established as a scholarship competition venue for teens as well as a fund-raising event for the Miss Maine Scholarship Pageant.
Our Purpose
The purpose of the Miss Maine’s Outstanding Teen Pageant is to provide the young ladies of Maine an opportunity to win scholarship money and to further their personal growth and education. Within this pageant forum, teens will be able to enhance their potential by sharpening their leadership, communication and public-speaking skills. Additionally, the program will enable contestants to develop poise, confidence and stage presence. With the inclusion of a talent performance, contestants will be afforded the opportunity to express their individuality and showcase their unique talents.
Date and Location
The Pageant is typicaly held in June at the Crooker Theater in Brunswick, Maine. The National Pageant will be held in the month of August in Orlando, Florida.
Eligibility and Entrance Requirements
- All girls between the ages of 13 -17 (excluding high school seniors) who reside in Maine are eligible.
- Contestants must be a United States citizen, have never been married or pregnant and have always been female.
- Contestants must never have been filmed or photographed in the nude or semi-nude.
- Contestants must participate in all areas of competition.
Costs
- Each contestant must pay an entry fee and solicit one salute page. All must be completed and paid in full before participation. Contact the director for more specific details.
- Admission tickets to the pageant will be available at the Pre-pageant Clinic.
- Program books with contestant photographs and pageant information and schedules will be available for purchase.
Accommodations
Contestants will be housed at a hotel and will be supervised by pageant officials during their stay. The pageant will provide lodging and meals associated with the Pageant.
Areas of Competition
The following is description of the areas of competition to be judged and the percentage of the contestant’s total score for each area:
- Interview (30%) - During this phase of the competition all 5 judges will interview each contestant for 8 minutes. The judges will ask her questions related to her interests, hobbies, educational goals and achievements, volunteer service and community activities, etc. Scoring will be based on the content of the interview and overall communication skills, personality, intelligence and poise. This part of the competition gives the judges a chance to meet each contestant as an individual and gives the contestant a chance to reveal her true self.
- On-stage Question (5%) - This phase of the competition serves as a final chance for contestants to impress the judges. The judges will ask each contestant an on-stage question. Scoring will reflect the ability of the contestant to communicate and speak effectively. The on-stage question also helps the judges to evaluate the contestants poise under pressure.
- Talent (35%) - All contestants will be judged on a 2 minute performance of their choice. Different talent presentations, such as playing an instrument, dancing, singing, reciting a poem, presenting a passage dramatic monologue, gymnastics etc, may be performed. Contestants will be scored on stage presence as well as technical skill.
- Evening Wear (15%) - Contestants are required to wear a full length gown which is in good taste and age appropriate. They will be judged on overall impression, walk, poise, posture and sense of confidence on stage.
- Scholastic Achievement (5%) - This phase of judging will be based on how well you are doing in school. A separate panel of judges will score this prior to the competition.
- Lifestyle and Fitness (10%) - Judges in this part of the competition will look to see how well the contestant maintains a lifestyle of good physical health, whether she meets the public expectation of a titleholder, and whether or not she has the confidence needed to be a titleholder. The contestant’s drive, energy, confidence, physical appearance, presence, and charisma are to be likewise considered.
Pageant Wardrobe
- An appropriate tasteful outfit for interviews such as skirt and blouse, dress, or pantsuit is acceptable. No jeans or sneakers.
- A costume or outfit appropriate for the talent performance.
- A floor length gown which is in good taste and age appropriate.
- For Lifestyle and Fitness wear what you would wear when you exercise or are physically active such as cheerleading outfit, skating outfit, golf attire, basketball uniform, etc.
- Sweat-suits and sneakers or other comfortable clothes can be worn for meetings and rehearsals.
