Where is she now?

Ellen Warren Gerard, Miss Maine 1964, continues to be a supporter of the Miss Maine Scholarship Pageant. Here is her story in her own words from the fal of 2006.

I celebrated my 60th birthday a few weeks ago -- an occasion that prompted me to think back on my life so far. I realize that being Miss Maine 1964 played an important role in molding my future. It opened so many doors!

Before becoming Miss Maine, I had never traveled out of New England. Because I won, I toured the United States with a well-known musical group, Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians. This would not have happened, had I not been "discovered" at the Miss America Pageant. I also traveled to Vietnam with Miss America, Jane Jayroe, to entertain the troops during the war -- an experience that I will never forget! Because of the pageant, I was able to pay for my entire education as well as travel the world as an ambassador of goodwill for my state.

I’ll admit there was a time when I was most embarrassed if someone talked about my pageant days. It did not seem relevant at the time when the Women's Lib movement was making serious waves. However, I no longer am uncomfortable when I am reminded that I was once Miss Maine. I am very, very proud, and view the pageant in a most positive light.

My husband Ron and I divide our time between Damariscotta Lake, Maine and Cape Coral, Florida. We enjoy time with our four children and five grandchildren. We love cooking and entertaining and enjoy traveling. In short, we are two baby boomers who are enjoying our retirement to the fullest. There don't seem to be enough hours in the day to do all that we want to do!

The Miss Maine Pageant opens doors for sure. It broadens the horizons of women who might not otherwise be given such an opportunity. When I attended the pageant this year, I was overwhelmed by the talent and intellect of the participants. Karissa has been given a golden opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of so many young people throughout Maine. Doors will definitely open for her and will continue to do so throughout her life!
